Tips To Make Crispy Samosas In An Air Fryer

Samosa is one such snack that everyone loves to eat. But one cannot deny that it can be extremely unhealthy and doesn't have the required nutrition. It is also a fact that resisting your favourite snack for a very long time is quite difficult. What you can try is using an air fryer for the same. It uses less oil and helps you to maintain your health goals.

Typically, a delectable combination of mashed potatoes, paneer, and peas spiced with garam masala, chilli, mint, and other spices is filled inside these deep-fried samosas, which are also paired with jalebis as an evening snack to satiate their taste buds. Many say it’s their favourite yet try not to eat too much of it since it is unhealthy. Not eating your favourite snack like samosas for a very long time may lead to overeating at once. There are so many ways through which you can make your samosas healthy and add the right kind of ingredients. This way, you won’t have to feel guilty every time you have some samosas. Instead of deep-frying it in oil like you usually do, if you’re someone who’s trying to cut back on the oil and unhealthy snacks, using an air-fryer to make your samosas can be beneficial. 

Using an air fryer for cooking your snacks that are generally deep-fried is a very well-known way of not using excess oil and still getting a similar crunch to the food. Deep-frying samosas means adding a lot of oil to the food and also making it full of unhealthy calories. A healthier option is to air fry your samosas, which require very little oil. It is almost like baking, and you don’t have to feel guilty about eating samosas at all. If you don’t have an air fryer, then you can bake your samosas as well in the oven. Both of these ways are quite healthy, and you can eat your favourite snacks without any hesitation.

While the flaky crust and piping hot filling are irresistible, the only problem is deep-frying. But with an air fryer, you can minimise the use of oil and air-fry the street snack to perfection. With a maida-based dough and a potato-based filling wrapped in a conical shape, you can make air-fried samosas at home in under half an hour. And if you thought vegetarian air fryer recipes only have French fries, that’s completely untrue. Read on to know how you can make samosas using them. All you have to do is follow these tips:

Prepare The Samosa Dough

Every samosa begins with dough. The dough must be made correctly for a samosa to be crispy and not crack while cooking. For that flaky texture, oil or ghee is also required. The dough will become overly elastic if you knead it too much. For 20 to 30 minutes, let the dough rest beneath a moist cloth. The gluten relaxes during this resting time, which facilitates rolling out the dough.

Preparing The Filling

We won’t enjoy a samosa without a filling. Every bite is flavourful when the spices are well-balanced. The filling is held together by the mashed potatoes. The filling requires a higher spice kick and a hint of tang from amchur or lemon juice because there is no deep-frying. To prevent soggy samosas, keep them somewhat dry. Caramelised onions, peanuts, raisins, or paneer can improve it. When fully cooked, non-vegetarian choices like chicken or keema perform well. A flavourful, well-balanced filling that crisps flawlessly without losing its richness is the aim while using an air-fryer instead of a kadai. 

Assembling The Samosa

Divide the shell dough into round balls. Roll them out using a rolling pin and then make them oval in shape. Now cut them in half. Next, what you do is use water on the straight-cut side to seal the shell in the shape of an open cone. After this, comes the filling that you have to add and then seal the cone and leave enough space on top to let the samosas get cooked. Add a little water along the lining to seal the samosa. Make all the samosas in this manner and keep them aside for 15 minutes to set. 

Set Up The Air-Fryer

Pre-heat the air fryer to 160 °C or 320 °F for 5 minutes. Now brush the samosas with a little oil and place them in the air fryer.  Air fry at 160 °C for about 8 minutes. Flip them once in the middle of the cooking. Now air fry at 200 °C for about another 6–8 minutes, until the samosas look done and golden. There are several ways to create samosas besides deep-frying. In addition to being healthy, preparing them in an air fryer is just as delicious. You can eat this snack guilt-free if you know a few methods.

Use A Brush Or Oil Spray

The little thing that makes a great impact when air-frying samosas is brushing them with oil. A thin layer of oil helps the outer layer become golden, crisp, and uniformly cooked rather than dry or uneven because there is no deep-frying. Cover all surfaces with a brush or spray, paying particular attention to the folds and edges where dryness first appears. A thin, uniform covering is sufficient; don’t soak them. For added flavour, you can use neutral oil or even a small amount of ghee. This easy method keeps the samosas much lighter while giving them a fried-like appearance.

Do Not Overcrowd The Air-Fryer

It’s one of the most common mistakes. Hot air is circulated in air fryers, and if you put too many samosas inside, the airflow becomes obstructed. They wind up steaming rather than crisping, leaving you with soggy, unevenly cooked areas. To allow the heat to flow easily, always arrange them in a single layer with a small gap between each piece. If necessary, cook in batches; the additional time is worthwhile. Giving them space guarantees a crunchy, golden surface that feels like a real samosa rather than a soft shortcut.
