A lot of people also toss these sweet potato fries with fruits such as apples and pears, and believe it or not, that’s a heavenly combination too.

In this recipe, you are not going to fry these sweet potato fries. Instead, you’ll fry with as little oil as possible, using an air fryer. Sweet potato fries are a delightful and nutritious variation of traditional potato fries. Made from sliced or wedged sweet potatoes, these fries offer a sweeter flavour and vibrant colour, setting them apart as a popular side dish option.

Their rising popularity is attributed to their delectable taste combined with their perceived health benefits. Packed with vitamins A, C, and potassium, sweet potato fries are a guilt-free treat for health-conscious individuals.

Their versatility in preparation, either baked or air-fried with minimal oil, further adds to their appeal. With a satisfying crunch and a hint of natural sweetness, sweet potato fries have become a favourite choice on menus worldwide.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Use a sharp chef’s knife to cut uniformly sized fries; this is more crucial than it seems. Uneven portions cause some to burn, while others remain moist.
  2. Use a heavy-bottomed kadai for even heat; thin ones burn the fries quickly. Sweet potatoes brown more quickly owing to their natural sugars, so heat the oil on medium rather than high.
  1. Pressure cookers aren’t for frying, but when used appropriately, they may help pre-soften sweet potatoes.
  2. Induction heats quickly; keep to medium (1200-1600W) to avoid scorching the sugars in sweet potatoes.
Step 1

Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly and leave the skin on for added nutrients.

Step 2

Cut the sweet potatoes into evenly-sized strips or wedges and keep thick. Try to keep them as uniform as possible for even cooking.

Step 3

In a large bowl, combine the olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, if using.

Step 4

Mix well to create a seasoned oil mixture. Toss the sweet potato strips in the seasoned oil mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated.

Step 5

Arrange the coated sweet potato strips in a single layer on the air fryer basket, leaving some space in between.

Step 6

Brush some olive oil on each. Fry for 10-15 minutes at 180 °C, flipping them halfway through the cooking time to ensure even crispiness.

Step 7

Once the sweet potato fries are golden brown and crispy on the edges, remove them from the oven.

Step 8

Let the fries cool slightly before serving.
