While air fryers offer innovative features and functionality, many people might be nervous to use them for the first time. But do not worry, there will always be help when you ask for it. When it comes to using an air fyer properly, these tips and suggestions will teach you every little thing. From their efficiency in cooking to how to keep it clean and lasting longer, read on to know more.

Air fryers have gained immense popularity in recent years as a versatile and efficient kitchen appliance, especially when they come with features like 360° heating, rapid cooking times, and preset menus, simplifying the cooking process while promoting healthier eating habits. These machines aim to give food a crispy exterior while maintaining a moist and tender inside. Frequently utilised to prepare deep-fried staples such as chicken wings, French fries, and onion rings, air fryers bypass the necessity to drench food in oil to achieve a crunchy layer. Furthermore, these devices can be employed to cook vegetables, seafood, and even desserts.

As a healthier option to traditional deep-frying methods, air fryers have risen in popularity in recent years, as they use minimal to no oil, leading to an overall reduction in the food’s fat content. However, as with any technology, they come with their share of misunderstandings and user manuals that might be confusing or difficult for many. With the following suggestions and cooking tips, you can easily use the air fryer to cook up yummy and wholesome dishes that usually would take too long to cook.

Pat-Drying Ingredients

Whether it is fried chicken or wedges of potatoes that need air frying, it is important to pat dry your food thoroughly before it is placed in the fryer. Not only does pat drying encourage efficient browning of food while it is being air fried, but the simple step also gets rid of excessive moisture that might tend to make your food soggy or not crisp even after it has been cooked in the air fryer. It also helps oil and seasoning stick evenly, making air fryer food crunchier, more flavorful, and properly cooked throughout.

Using A Smidge Of Fat

Dabbing a few drops of oil or butter on to your food that is about to go into the air fryer, enhances the ability for your food to achieve a golden-brown colour, similar to that of deep-fried food. For sweet dishes like French toast or waffle bites, applying a little honey or maple syrup gives the same desired effect as well as a perfectly caramelised crust.

Cooking In Batches

Whether it is deep frying or air frying, the one key tip to follow is to not overcrowd the fryer as the process requires each piece of food to develop a crispy exterior which can only happen when the circulating hot air has access to all the surfaces of the food in question. Avoid over-filling the air fryer basket and cook your food in small batches to ensure evenly crisped up food that is cooked through.

Learning To Preheat

Preheating works especially well if you want a rapid sear on smaller or thinner pieces of meat. Preheating can also help you avoid overcooking when cooking leftovers or breaded frozen meals. However, if you are cooking larger portions of food, such as steak or chicken, you can skip the preheating step.

Remember To Flip Ingredients

Tossing meat, fish or vegetables that are being cooked in an air fryer halfway through cooking is the best way to make sure that the food is cooked evenly from all sides. Not doing so might result in an uneven texture or undercooked food, which is not palatable. Use a pair of tongs or a fork to pick and turn over each individual piece carefully, halfway through the cooking time so that the food comes in contact with the hot air for an equal amount of time, on all sides.

Stirring Is Important

When you dry any dish, you need to stir in between, especially when it seems half-cooked. You do that when making anything either in the oven or on the stove. You have to follow the same rule when cooking snacks in an air fryer. Halfway through cooking, stop the air fryer, and stir the ingredients. Flipping the food is also a good idea for even cooking. It will make the dish crispy on all sides.

Ingredients Should Be Equal In Size

Cutting your protein or vegetables into even-sized pieces is important for all the food to cook properly at the same time. Unevenly chopped pieces of tofu, paneer, vegetables or meat will also end up giving you an unevenly cooked end product – with some of the pieces getting more cook time than the rest, resulting in overcooking; and the big pieces remaining undercooked or raw. It is also important to trim any thin edges of your chicken, mutton, potatoes and so on that might burn during the process, to avoid bitterness or unpleasant flavours.

Cleaning Every Inch

In an air fryer, everything happens in the fry basket. This is also the place where mess is mostly created. After the cooking is over, allow it to cool down, and take out the bits and pieces of the food. Wash it with soap and water and let it dry. If the basket is too sticky, soak it in the water and then use soap to clean it.  Wipe the inside of the air fryer with a damp microfibre cloth or a non-abrasive sponge dipped in dish soap. Then using a clean wet towel, wipe away any soap residue.  Sometimes lightweight foods can flutter around and stick to the air fryer’s heating element. At such time, disconnect the air fryer and let it cool completely before removing any solid object from the heating element with the help of the brush.
