Onam Sadhya Kootu Curry with Kerala Matta Red Rice

#Feast26 Kootu Curry is a thick, traditional, and mildly sweet side dish made with black chickpeas, yam, and raw banana, served hot with earthy Kerala Matta red rice during an Onam Sadhya.

Step 1

Wash and soak matta rice, at least for 3 hours. If you cook in a pressure cooker, add 4 cups of water in 1 cup of rice. 1 whistle on medium high flame and other 4 whistles on a low flame.

Step 2

Cook soaked black grams in a pressure cooker till 6 whistles blows. Wash, peel off banana, and yam. Cut in small pieces, soak in salted water.

Step 3

Take a pan, and add water and salt. Now add yam and banana pieces. Cook till turns soft.

Step 4

Take a mixer jar, add 1/4 cup grated coconut, jeera, and green chilli. Add water and grind coarse. Keep ready paste.

Step 5

Take a pan, add oil, hing, mustard seeds, dry red chilli, and curry leaves. Add rest of 3/4 cup of grated coconut. Roast till turns in brown colour.

Step 6

Now add cooked black chana and coconut paste in cooked yam and banana. Add salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and black pepper powder. Mix well.

Step 7

Now add brown color roasted coconut powder in kottu curry.

Step 8

Add tamarind pulp and jaggery. Mix well. Cook for 5 minutes on low flame. Then turn off gas.

Step 9

Ready to serve Onam Sadhya Kootu Curry. Traditionally, it is served on a banana leaf. Serve with matta red rice and papadam. Enjoy..
